Black Widow is a well-known character in both the Marvel Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scarlett Johansson initially appeared in Kevin Feige’s MCU in Iron Man 2 (2010), with Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), as an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D agent working for Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)
. After last year’s Black Widow (2021), directed by Cate Shortland, which served as a standalone sequel to Chris Evans’ (Steve Rogers/Captain America) Captain America: Civil War (2016) and a prequel to the tragic events of the Russo Brothers’ Infinity Saga conclusion, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame, Natasha Romanoff’s time seemed to be up (2019). During a violent sequence with Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye in the latter Marvel movies, Natasha sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone on Vormir.
Due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Johansson’s much-anticipated solo installment in Marvel Phase Four was delayed multiple times, eventually releasing last July in theaters and on Disney+ simultaneously from the Marvel studio — a move that prompted the Marvel actress to sue The Walt Disney Company for allegedly breaking contractual agreements regarding box office receipts and the star’s salary.
Shortland’s spy thriller, which included characters including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Rick Mason (O-T Fagbenle), premiered in the Marvel Universe in 2020.
